A History of Barrio Walter Ferretti

Prepared by Esmeralda Lorente, President
Asociacion de Mujeres "Consuelo Buitrago"

Walter Ferretti Barrio (Neighborhood) was founded on March 16, 1989, as a planned urban expansion situated in District V on the southern edge of Managua. The land was given to war disabled people and widows and orphans of Sandinista soldiers.

The "Consuelo Buitrago" Women's Association (AMUCOBU) started working in the barrio from its inception. Even before AMUCOBU had been registered as a legally constituted association it initiated a number of projects in response to the basic needs of the people of the barrio.

  • Installation of a system for piped drinking water
  • Latrine project (a cement latrine base was delivered to each family)
  • Nutrition program for seriously underweight children
  • Electricity supply was brought into the barrio
  • Primary health care
  • Pre-school and primary education
  • Health education project (a network of 25 health promoters was formed)
  • Installation of sewage pipes

In 1996, the "Consuelo Buitrago" Women's Association became a legally registered non-profit association and since then has continued its work in support of community development.

Currently, AMUCOBU is working in the following areas:

  • Primary health care
  • The vaccination program in which children, and women of child-bearing age, are offered a vaccination service one day each week
  • A project for integrated training of young people and adolescents of the barrio. The objective is to improve the life of these young people and adolescents by giving them technical training in tailoring or cake making and decorating, alongside planned training sessions in themes of interest to them
  • Continuation of pre-school and primary education for the children of the barrio
  • A nutrition program directed toward malnourished children.

These projects of AMUCOBU have been supported by organizations including Horizont 3000 (Austria), Habitat, Plan Nicaragua, Project Children's Health, Milagro Foundation, Briehl Foundation, Jadetree Two Foundation, Direct Relief International, and American Jewish World Services.

In addition to working with the non-governmental organizations which support the various projects and activities, AMUCOBU coordinates with, and maintains work relationships with, several government organizations including the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sports, and the Youth Office of Managua City Hall.

As a result of the neo-liberal policies which the current government has imposed on the people of Nicaragua, the social and economic situation of most of the population has seriously deteriorated. It is the poorest sectors of society that have been hardest hit.

Even though every Nicaraguan has a constitutional right to free health care and free education, this right has become an impossible dream. For this reason, health and education projects are a priority for AMUCOBU. AMUCOBU continues to promote and implement projects and activities that have a positive impact on the quality of life of the people of Barrio Walter Ferretti.
